Museum of Science and Industry
Hyde Park is home to the world-famous Museum of Science and Industry and the Frank Lloyd Wright Robie House, as well as many ethnic restaurants, family parks, bookstores, coffee shops, and more.
Attractions & Annual Events
Hyde Park has a number of cultural and educational attractions and hosts a variety of annual events in the summer and fall.
Museums, Art, & Music
- DuSable Museum of African American History. Located across the street from the Hospitals, this popular museum is devoted to preserving and interpreting the historical achievements and experiences of African Americans.
- Hyde Park Art Center. Hyde Park Art Center showcases work by Chicago-area artists and offers hands-on classes for artists of all ages.
- Museum of Science and Industry. At this landmark museum, you can walk through a large-scale replica of the human heart, watch baby chicks hatch from their eggs, tour a coal mine, and view a breathtaking IMAX film.
- The Oriental Institute. This research organization and museum is devoted to the study of the ancient Near East. Founded in 1919 by James Henry Breasted, the Institute is an internationally recognized pioneer in the archaeology, philology, and history of early Near Eastern civilizations.
- The Renaissance Society. Chicago’s oldest contemporary art museum, the Renaissance Society maintains an international reputation as one of the finest resources for contemporary art. It also sponsors concerts, performances, film and video screenings, and talks by noted artists and critics.
- Rockefeller Memorial Chapel. This architectural masterpiece is a spectacular venue for concerts, theater, and lectures by internationally known speakers.
- Smart Museum of Art. This museum features a collection that spans five millennia of fine art with strengths in European and American modern and contemporary works, East Asian art, and works on paper from all periods.
- University of Chicago Presents. Founded in 1943, University of Chicago Presents brings world-renowned classical, contemporary and jazz artists to Chicago audiences.
Theater & Film
- The Court Theatre. This acclaimed professional theater features classical plays and musical theater productions.
- DOC Films. This on-campus movie theater screens a wide variety of films, including independent and foreign films, classics, and recent box-office hits.
- University Theater. These student-run and student-performed productions take place in the popular student center, the Reynolds Club, on campus.
Other Key Attractions
- The Frank Lloyd Wright/Frederick C. Robie House. Designed in 1909, the Prairie-style Robie House is considered one of Wright’s finest achievements.
- Midway Plaisance Park. The Midway Plaisance is a magnificent linear stretch of parkland between Jackson and Washington parks.
- The Osaka Garden. Located in Jackson Park, this garden features traditional Japanese elements such as an arching moon bridge, peaceful lagoons, colorful flowers, lush plants, and trees.
Annual Events
- 4th on 53rd Parade. In this annual Fourth of July celebration, a parade of citizens and community groups winds through Hyde Park and ends up in Nichols Park, where family activities are held.
- 57th Street Art Fair. Every June, 500+ exhibitors show their handiwork during the Midwest’s oldest outdoor juried art fair.
- 57th Street Children’s Book Fair. Each September, books come to life for children and their families through storytelling, singing, bookmaking, and make-believe.
- Chicago Half Marathon. Every September more than 17,000 runners take part in this 13.1-mile run, which starts and finishes in Jackson Park.
- Hyde Park Jazz Festival. In late September, 20,000 music lovers come to hear more than 30 jazz acts in 13 venues around campus and Hyde Park.
- Interfaith Community Thanksgiving Service. This community partnership is geared towards children and sponsored by the Hyde Park/Kenwood Interfaith Council and Rockefeller Memorial Chapel.
